How to Tell If Your Bag Is Worth Its Price Tag. The Difference Between £400 Leather Bags and £50
How & Why Does Leather Vary
When it comes to choosing a leather product the quality can vary significantly and therefore also the price tag. In this article I will explain to reasons to why some leather handbags, travel bags and totes vary from prices such as £50 to £500 or even £5000. Ever wondered what the difference is between genuine leather, top grain leather split leather and full grain leather? After reading this you will understand all that is needed when you next go looking to go shopping for leather bags, sofas, shoes or jackets.
There are four main types of leather. Genuine leather, top grain leather, split leather and full grain leather. Each grade of leather is taken from a different layer within the cow hide which varies texture, weight, strength, softness and character. There is a very large difference between genuine leather to Full Grain leather.
Genuine leather is one of the most common leather grades as it provides a moderate price to quality ratio. It is the third grade of leather and is produced from the layers of hide that remain after the top is split off for the better grades. The surface is usually refinished (spray painted) to resemble a higher grade. It is used in a wide range of products such as wallets, bags, watch straps and belts. Usually genuine leather is lined with synthetic leather to make it thicker, yet keep costs low; this does though usually result in peeling and noticeable changes in texture throughout the leather. You can conduct a simple test to see if you leather is real, or synthetic by simply holding it over a flame. Real leather does not burn but synthetic leather will melt, thus the reason for why bikers wear real leather to save their skin. The advantages of genuine leather is that its colour remains fairly consistent and that it is a very suitable grade of leather for small items such as wallets and belts, yet for large items such as bags and sofas the cheap quality can become quite noticeable and its lifespan can be significantly smaller.
Top Grain Leather can be a very misleading name for only the second highest leather grade. It's had the "split" layer separated away, making it thinner and more pliable than full grain. Its surface has been sanded and a finish coat added to the surface which results in a colder, plastic feel with less breathability, and will not develop a natural patina. It is typically less expensive and has greater resistance to stains than full-grain leather, so long as the finish remains unbroken. Top grain leather does not age nicely with use. They sanded off the strongest fibres of the hide leaving mainly the horizontal (easily pulled apart) fibres which means it is missing the high quality texture found in full grain leather. Usually this leather is found in sofas and chairs as it is cheap and durable which means it will have a much higher lifespan the genuine leather, yet it isn't as expensive as full grain leather.
Full Grain Leather This is the best leather money can buy. It comes from the top layer of the hide which has ALL of the grain, therefore, FULL grain. The natural surface of full grain leather burnishes and beautifies with use. It has a much larger life span, and each item will tend to be different to another due to the variation of the hide fibres. Sometimes you can make out mosquito bite markets, or barb wire scars due to the leather coming from the very TOP leather of the hide. Some companies sort of spray paint their inferior leather to try to make it look like full grain leather, but it just ends up looking like someone spray painted some cheap leather. From what I've seen, maybe 2% of all bags are made of Full Grain. This leather is expensive for me to buy and very difficult to work. Expect to pay a high price for this leather as it is by far the best.
Bonded Leather is the PT Cruiser of the leather world... pure junk. Leftover scraps are ground together with glue and resurfaced in a process similar to vinyl manufacture. Bonded leather is weak and degrades quickly with use, it is made only for cheap and useless goods. Most Bibles are covered with this. This is the lowest and cheapest leather grade.
What to look for when next time you're leather shopping.
The first thing to consider is the grade of leather. If your paying over £120 for a messenger bag or a weekend bag you should really only be looking for Full grain leather. Many bags can be priced up to around £200-300 and still only be made from genuine leather. In cases such as this you are really only paying for the brand of the bag and not for high quality leather.
Another point to take into consideration is whether the leather has been dyed with organic dyes or wet blue dyes as each has its advantages and disadvantages. Organic dyes are made from tree bark and are able to produce leather which can be softer then wet blue leather. It is though generally three times more expensive and much less durable then wet-blue leather. If it is exposed to too much water it tends to fade, and shrink drastically, the lifetime is much shorter and if left in sunlight the colour can fade and leather can become much harder.
Wet-blue leather is significantly stronger then organic dyed leather. It is made from Chromium 3 which is used to soften the leather and allow the dye to absorb into the leather much more efficiently and therefore colour tend to be much bolder and brighter. The leather also is much more water resistant and its lifespan can by far exceed leather made from organic dyes.
From my years of experience within the leather industry I have come across one of the few companies that manufacture leather products made from this superior wet-blue dye, combine them with 100% full grain leather and then produce them at a price which is far lower than typical highs street retailers.
